Venue
The Workshop will be held at the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, on the Pilanesburg Game Reserve, two hours by car fromJohannesburg .
Travel Advisory - Air Travel :
Fly in to OR Tambo International, the mainairport of Johannesburg .
Mostly, flights will arrive in the morning. This is good, as we can
then travel
in convey in rental vehicles to Pilanesberg. Please send your air
travel plans
in to the Organisers, so that your local travel can be co-ordinated.
Travel Advisory - Local Travel:
We will be travelling in rental vehicles in convoy from Johannesburg to Pilanesberg on Monday in the late morning or soon after lunch, and returning from Pilanesberg to Johannesburg the same way on Friday in the morning. It is also possible to travel on your own as well. We can make arrangements that you have a GPS to facilitate navigation. There is also a shuttle service that can be arranged if necessary.
Cell Phones :
Make sure that at least one of your party has a SA cell phone, or cell phone roaming activated for voice, or at least sms (text) activation, which is usually inexpensive. This is really about logistics, we do not expect any safety problems. Nonetheless, it will set the minds of the organisers at rest to know we can all communicate effectively and immediately with all our delegates, all the time.
Equipment :
In a game reserve, you will find it very rewarding to have an excellent set of binoculars (I prefer 10x50) and a good camera with a zoom to 300 or 400 mm.
Clothing :
For early mornings and late evenings, in case there are mosquitoes, one normally wears full length trousers and long sleeved shirts, light safari colours. If you stay longer than the Workshop, and you may participate in a bush walk, then of course, sensible closed shoes are required. In the heat of the day, you can adjust to more relaxed attire.
Medical :
The Pilanesberg is not expected to be a malaria area at all .... and normally, at this time, you never even hear a mosquito ....
If necessary, we will be able to purchase insect repellent.
What to expect :
A conference in a game park is very effective. The completely different and unique environment stimulates discussion, is a great ice-breaker, and lasting scholarly networks are formed. The isolation and the fact that all delegates are together in the camp all day means full participation, especially for students. On another level, it's a life changing experience. Conservation is really working in SA. It is a very sustainable business model, and the parks and facilities are growing and improving all the time. In addition, a game experience will restore your faith that we will succeed to leave a great legacy of a green planet to the next generations.
