Travel Information - Air Travel and the internal last leg of the journey:

Air

Fly in to O.R. Tambo International Airport, the main airport of Gauteng in SA and then you get a local connecting flight from OR Tambo to Polokwane International Airport. We advise you to use a flight which will arrive at O.R. Tambo in the morning or early afternoon so that you can have a chance to get the connecting flight to Polokwane. We hope to arrange a pick-up transport from Polokwane International airport to carry you to your Hotel at Thohoyandou. There are also car rentals at the Polokwane Airport and if you need one you can get it from there.

Road

If you are traveling from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) to Thohoyandou: From Johannesburg, follow the N1 to (Pietersburg) Polokwane - approximately 4 and half hours' drive. The N1 goes through (Pietersburg) Polokwane. Follow the N1 road to (Louis Trichardt) Makhado - approximately 1 hour drive. At the second four-way stop, turn right at the signboard saying: R524 road, Thohoyandou / Punda Maria / Levubu, (Punda Maria road). Drive straight for about 70km. You will pass 5 traffic lights. At the big traffic circle turn left and then cross 2 more traffic lights and on the 3rd traffic light turn left and drive straight towards the University of Venda.

Cell Phones:

It is highly recommended that you activate your cell phone for voice roaming or at least for SMS (text) roaming, which is usually inexpensive.

Equipment:

If you plan to visit a Game Reserve, you will find it very rewarding to have an excellent set of binoculars (Preferably 10x50) and a good camera with a zoom to 300 or 400 mm. There are few places to visit which are close to Thohoyandou, like Kruger National Park (Punda Maria gate), Makuya Game Reserve, Phiphidi Waterfalls, The Big Tree at Tshipise, Luphephe/ Nwanedi Game reserve, Nandoni Dam, etc.

Medical:

The Conference venue is not known to be a malaria area. However, if you plan to visit a game reserve in the Eastern part of the conference venue, you may enter a malaria area. Anti-malaria prophylactics are recommended for visitors going to malaria areas. There are several types, and for some types of medication, the course should start a few weeks in advance of your visit. It is also possible to not take medication, but to follow certain preventative measures. The preventative measures involve the use of insect repellant lotion or spray for the evenings and mornings, the wearing of clothes as recommended below when outside at these times, the use of mosquito repellant coils or vapours overnight in the bedroom and sleeping under mosquito nets. Frequent and long term visitors usually choose the preventative measures alone. This is a very personal decision. Consult your family doctor about the measures you would like to take.

Clothing:

No special dress requirements. It is summer in South Africa and its hot and rainy in this region, carrying some light clothes and umbrellas is advisable. Consult your own favourite Weather Service for further details.
