Subject: MINISTERIAL MEETING WITH PROFESSIONAL COUNCILS OF SOUTH AFRICA
Dear Dr Martinez
The Department of Higher Education and Training has embarked on the road towards the development of a skilled and capable workforce to support an inclusive growth path. Professional councils have fundamentally important functions to perform in contributing towards the achievements set out in the National Skills Development Strategy III and the development of scarce human resources in our society.
The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Blade Nzimande, wishes to engage in a discussion with representatives from professional councils on their roles and contributions towards the development of occupational directed and professional skills in South Africa. The DHET is scheduling a consultative meeting with representatives from statutory and non-statutory professional councils to reflect on the contribution that these councils can make in terms of the following concerns.
* Development of scare skills in support of a growing economy
* Enhancing access and articulation to training and education in professional occupations
* Possible inhibitors towards successful completion of education and training programmes
* Labour market absorption of graduates and continuous professional development
